  • High Dynamic Range Stereo Video Using SIFT and Simultaneous Multi-Exposure

    Stereo video is dramatically changing the landscape of the movie industry. As more and more feature films are shot entirely in 3D, we propose a method to improve the color fidelity of stereo video by adjusting the exposure of the stereo cameras individually.     Stereo video is dramatically changing the landscape of the movie industry. As more and more feature films are shot entirely in 3D, we propose a method to improve the color fidelity of stereo video by adjusting the exposure of the stereo cameras individually. By effectively transferring the technology used in high dynamic range imaging to stereo video, we are able to enhance the contrast and the perceived quality of both video channels, while still only requiring a single shot. The efficient use of SIFT descriptors makes this method easily adaptable to any stereoscopic video and removes the main drawbacks of both stereo video and traditional high dynamic range imaging.

This approach has been developed at Peak Software Technologies GmbH to fulfill the growing demand for more realistic rendering capabilities and real-time performance in television broadcasting. The Viz Engine as their flagship product is used by most major television networks around the world. Their constant crave for graphically richer television content and virtual studio environments is pushing the limits of even the most current video hardware. This approach discusses an adaption of Viz Engine to render advanced and flexible video effects directly on multiple standard GPUs, instead of relying on dedicated video hardware. The proposed adaption has to cope with the rising demands of the media industry to produce standard and high-definition video output with advanced compositing effects in real-time.
